The first mass death of wild birds due to the H5 strain of bird flu has been recorded in Australia. The number of confirmed cases in the country has reached 74.
“Elchi” reports that, according to reports in the Australian local press, tests conducted by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) have confirmed that the mass deaths of wild birds discovered at Baudin Rocks in South Australia were caused by the H5 bird flu strain.
In addition to South Australia, deaths of wild birds linked to the H5 bird flu strain have also been confirmed in Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria. The number of confirmed cases of the H5 bird flu strain in the country has reached 74, with 54 of them in South Australia.
Australia’s Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Julie Collins, stated that further spread of the H5 bird flu strain and its impact on more animals is expected.
Collins, confirming the first mass death of wild birds due to the H5 type bird flu in the state of South Australia, added: “We will do everything we can to protect Australia’s wildlife as much as possible.” The first suspected case of the “H5N1” type bird flu virus in Australia was detected on June 19, and on July 29, it was determined that the disease was spreading “locally” among wild birds.
