Zakharova noted the lies in the Italian Foreign Minister’s statements regarding the expulsion of diplomats.
“Elchi” reports that Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani mischaracterized the reasons for the expulsion of two Italian diplomats from Russia, calling it an unfounded “act of retaliation.” This statement was made by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova on her Telegram channel.
She referred to Tajani’s claim that the Italian attaché and his assistant were asked to leave Moscow “without any reason,” while two Russian diplomats were accused of espionage against Italy.
“I don’t understand: ‘without any reason’ or ‘act of retaliation’? Both are incorrect. This is a retaliatory measure against the actions of the Italian government,” Zakharova noted. She also criticized the way Italian officials presented information about diplomatic conflicts to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. According to her, Rome is trying to create a distorted picture where they are justified in expelling Russian diplomats, while Moscow’s reciprocal measures are presented as unprovoked aggression.
On July 20, the Russian Foreign Ministry declared Italian embassy attaché Vittorio Parrella and his assistant Davide D’Aprile persona non grata. This step was a symmetrical response to the expulsion of two Russian diplomatic mission employees from Italy.
