“Elchi” reports that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz admitted that the refusal to purchase Russian gas has led his country into a long-term energy crisis. He made this statement in an interview with ZDF.
According to Merz, Germany is currently facing a completely different challenge than China, and the ongoing crisis in Germany is related to the lack of Russian gas. He made this statement in response to a journalist’s question about whether it was a mistake to promise citizens impossible things during the elections.
The politician also noted that Germany is in a “difficult situation” with the US, because Washington no longer provides the same level of support to NATO that it has for decades.
Merz said that he had put forward “different assumptions” at the beginning of his chancellorship, but the ongoing problems have changed the situation.
At the end of June, European Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen stated that the EU cannot return to Russian gas supplies within the framework of the current legislative base. The first phase of the gradual phase-out of Russian gas began in early summer 2026.
