US President Donald Trump said regarding his country’s intervention in Iraq after the September 11 attacks: “It is clear that they attacked the wrong country and caused great damage.”
elchi reports that Trump and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaydi held a press conference after meeting at the White House.
Stating that he was against the US intervention in Iraq, Trump said: “I have always said, don’t go into Iraq. Don’t attack Iraq. It is clear that they attacked the wrong country and caused great damage.”
Praising Zaydi’s struggle in the election process, Trump touched upon the cooperation to be carried out with the new Prime Minister of Iraq, especially regarding the country’s oil reserves.
Regarding the question about the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq, Trump replied: “We don’t think we need an army there anymore. You have a great opportunity. All oil companies are now partnering with Iraq and getting along very well. This is a great relationship where we don’t need an army there.”
Trump stated that they would be in the region to protect Iraq if necessary, but “they do not think it will be necessary.” Iraqi Prime Minister Zaydi also drew attention to his country’s fight against the ISIS terrorist organization, emphasizing that this fight cost Iraq “more than 400 billion dollars.” Noting that the fight against ISIS destroyed Iraq’s infrastructure, Zaydi said, “Today, some cities in Iraq are completely destroyed, they are like refugee camps. We have a plan to return them to their homes. We need a fair share.”
