Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has called US President Donald Trump’s statement that a 20 percent transit fee will be applied to all cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz “piracy”.
elchi reports that speaking at an event in Sao Paulo, Lula da Silva reacted to Trump’s statement about imposing a transit fee on all cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Lula da Silva stated, “A country as significant as the US, which has long fought against piracy, cannot now turn into a pirate itself. They have no right to collect taxes from here (the Strait of Hormuz). The US is responsible for what is happening in the Strait of Hormuz. It was not closed before.”
Recalling that the Strait of Hormuz was open for navigation before the US attack on Iran, Lula da Silva claimed that the Trump administration is “trying to profit by turning disasters into opportunities.” Lula da Silva stated that the ongoing war in the Middle East is causing “serious” damage to the global economy and added, “The cost of the war is reflected in our food supply. As oil prices rise, the prices of beans, rice, tomatoes, and onions also rise.” US President Donald Trump had announced that the US naval blockade against Iran in the Strait of Hormuz had been reinstated and that a 20% transit fee would be applied to all cargo passing through the strait. Emphasizing the costs of maintaining security in the region, Trump said, “To cover all the costs necessary to maintain security and safety in this extremely unstable region of the world, a 20% transit fee will be applied to all cargo passing through the strait.”
