According to the ROK President, during one of these contacts, Trump asked if the Republic of Korea could “build 10 ships for the US Navy in a short time.” “I replied that, of course, we can. We will do our best,” Lee Jae-myung said during a briefing.
Following the summit held with the US in Gyeongju in the autumn of 2025, the Republic of Korea promised to invest $350 billion in the US shipbuilding industry. In return, Washington decided to reduce customs duties and “allowed” Seoul to build a nuclear-powered submarine.
