Foreign Minister: Section 907 does not align with the level of Azerbaijan-US partnership

On June 17, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, received Abraham Hamadeh, a member of the US House of Representatives, who is on a visit to our country.

According to the information provided to elchi by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during the meeting, an exchange of views took place on the current state and development prospects of Azerbaijan-US bilateral relations, regional and international security issues, energy security, transport and communication links, as well as the situation in the South Caucasus in the post-conflict period.

Minister Jeyhun Bayramov emphasized the importance of the Summit held in Washington last August for bilateral and regional relations, noting that the historic agreements reached within the framework of the summit serve to elevate the relations between the two countries to a qualitatively new level. It was stated that the Strategic Partnership Charter signed between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the United States of America creates an important foundation for further expanding cooperation in areas such as political dialogue, economic cooperation, energy security, and security.

In addition, it was noted that for the first time, the Azerbaijan-US Economic Cooperation Dialogue was held, and 10 cooperation documents covering trade, investments, energy, transport, digital development, and other areas were signed.

At the meeting, the importance of implementing the TRIPP project, which will serve to strengthen transport-communication links in the region and create unimpeded connections between the main part of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, was highlighted.

During the discussion on the future development prospects of Azerbaijan-US relations, the importance of removing restrictions in bilateral cooperation was emphasized. In this context, it was noted that the complete repeal of Section 907, which restricts US government aid to Azerbaijan, would be in line with the spirit of the strategic partnership between the two countries and would contribute to the further expansion of cooperation in the fields of security, energy, transport, economy, and regional stability. It was stated that the mentioned amendment reflects an outdated approach in its essence and does not align with current geopolitical realities, as well as the level of the Azerbaijan-US partnership.

Describing Azerbaijan’s contributions to the energy security of Europe and a wider geography for many years, the Minister provided information about the projects our country is implementing in the field of green energy, alongside traditional energy resources. It was emphasized that there are broad opportunities for cooperation between Azerbaijan and the US in this direction.

Highlighting the strategic importance of Azerbaijan’s relations with Central Asian countries and the admission of our country as a full member of the Central Asian Consultative Meeting, it was noted that there are broad opportunities for cooperation in the C6 format.

During the conversation, the Azerbaijan-Armenia normalization process was also discussed. The Minister provided detailed information to the other side about the Azerbaijan-Armenia normalization process and the restoration and construction work being carried out in our liberated territories.
