Russian leader spoke about US-Iran war

The Russian leader called US President Donald Trump’s decision to stop military operations correct and expressed hope for peace in the region.

“Elchi” reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this at the plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

He also noted that Moscow is in contact with Washington, Tehran, and Tel Aviv, including regarding the situation at the Bushehr nuclear power plant:

“Everyone guarantees us that accidental missile strikes near the station occurred. Everyone guarantees us that it was an accident and will not happen again. I have no reason to believe that they are deceiving us. After the situation calms down, Russia will continue the construction of nuclear facilities in the country. However, addressing Iran’s concerns regarding restrictions on peaceful nuclear projects could also play a role here,” he noted.

Speaking about the causes of the war, Putin stated that he does not see any provocation by Iran in the conflict with the US:

“I believe that we reached an agreement at that time, we accepted the relevant agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, and everything was under the control of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). But unfortunately, the situation developed differently at that time, in a different framework.”

The Russian leader noted that Moscow has no information that Tehran is trying to develop nuclear weapons:

“Israel’s concerns are known to everyone; they stem from their belief that Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran has repeatedly stated, both in the past and now, that it has no plans to acquire such weapons. The main problem in this situation is the lack of mutual trust.”
