Czech Republic to block EU trade sanctions against Israel

The Czech Republic will not allow the European Union to adopt further trade sanctions against Israel and will block them if necessary.

elchi reports that this was stated by Czech Foreign Minister Petr Masinka at a press conference following talks with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who is visiting the republic. The meeting was broadcast by the “ČTK” news agency.

“We will not allow any further EU trade sanctions against Israel, even if we have to block the adoption of sanctions as the only member state of the community to do so. We will absolutely not allow the EU’s association partnership agreement with Israel to be abandoned or frozen,” Masinka said.

He also emphasized that the Czech Republic has “insisted on the position that no Israeli politician can be subject to sanctions.”

“Israel has many enemies and few friends. I want it to be perfectly clear that the Czech Republic is among Israel’s friends,” the Czech Foreign Minister added. He stated that he supports the early completion of the process of moving the republic’s embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Recalling that the decision was made by the Czech government, Masinka noted, “Personally, I would very much like this.”
