WHO: Countries must be prepared for new hantavirus cases

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has issued warnings regarding the hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship.
elchi reports that health officials in Paris stated that the condition of a French woman infected with the virus on the ship is critical and she has been placed on a ventilator in intensive care.
Speaking at a press conference in Madrid, Ghebreyesus thanked Spain for the “compassion and solidarity” shown in accepting the ship in distress.
Noting that the current situation does not indicate a larger epidemic, Ghebreyesus said: “However, given the length of the incubation period, we will witness new cases in the coming weeks.”
So far, three passengers have died as a result of the outbreak on the MV Hondius, which was sailing from Argentina to Cape Verde, including one German and two Dutch nationals. The WHO has confirmed nine cases of the “Andes” variant of the virus, and among those evacuated from the ship, one French and one US citizen have tested positive.
