Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares has stated that the European Union must create its own army to reduce its dependence on the US in the field of defense.
elchi reports that, speaking at the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, Albares said that after US President Donald Trump’s criticisms of the NATO alliance, European countries must be prepared to test whether actors like Russia will help Washington or not. Albares said: “We shouldn’t wake up every morning wondering what the next step of the US will be.”
This will not weaken NATO
Claiming that an independent defense force would not weaken NATO, the Spanish Foreign Minister reminded that the US strengthening its own army does not harm the alliance. Noting the importance of restructuring the deterrence offered by NATO, Albares said: “If NATO can no longer provide the security it once did, we as Europeans must do more.”
