The official, referring to the ceasefire reached on April 7 and subsequently extended, noted that there has been no exchange of fire between the US Armed Forces and Iran since that date.
War Powers Act debate
This justification by the administration is seen as an attempt to bypass the 1973 War Powers Act.
This law requires the president to obtain official Congressional approval for military operations lasting more than 60 days.
The Trump administration was required to obtain authorization or cease military operations by Friday, which would have been the 60th day of the war.
