The baseless and biased opinions expressed by New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani in his “X” platform post regarding the so-called 1915 Armenian genocide, as well as Azerbaijan’s efforts to restore its territorial integrity and sovereignty, have been met with sharp protest from Azerbaijanis worldwide.
“Elchi” reports that a petition has been launched at the initiative of the Azerbaijan-American Youth Federation with the aim of properly informing the world community and ensuring an objective approach by international organizations.
By supporting this petition, Azerbaijanis worldwide have expressed their serious concern over the New York mayor’s post, which does not reflect the truth regarding Azerbaijan.
The petition notes that such biased approaches are concerning at a time when the US supports a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia and important steps are being taken toward the normalization of relations. It is stated that, according to the assessment of the United Nations (UN) mission sent to Karabakh on October 2, 2023, no instances of violence against the civilian population were observed, and no facts of damage to civilian infrastructure were detected in those territories. It was specifically emphasized that during the 44-day Patriotic War, a number of Azerbaijani cities, including Ganja, Barda, and Tartar, were subjected to missile and artillery fire, which resulted in civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure. In addition, attention was drawn to the Khojaly genocide, one of the gravest tragedies in human history, which took place in February 1992, and it was recalled that hundreds of Azerbaijani civilians were brutally murdered.
In conclusion, it was demanded that an objective position based on the UN Charter, UN Security Council resolutions, general principles of international law, and historical facts be demonstrated in such matters.
