Are these universities in Azerbaijan being merged?

Opinions have been circulating in educational groups and pages on social media regarding the potential closure of the Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU). It is even alleged that the possibility of merging the university with Baku Engineering University in the near future is being considered. These claims have raised certain questions, particularly among students studying at these educational institutions.

To what extent are these claims grounded?

“Elchi” reports that AzTU stated to Globalinfo.az that the claims about the closure of the Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU) are false:

“The university continues its activities at a high level. AzTU is one of the 4-5 universities in Azerbaijan that appear in world rankings. It should be noted that when universities are evaluated in world rankings, management, scientific research potential, quality of education, and international reputation are taken into account.

According to the results of the “QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2025”, AzTU has been included in the list of the world’s best universities.

AzTU has been ranked in the TOP 500 in the “Times Higher Education” Interdisciplinary Science ranking.

It was awarded 5 stars (“excellent”) within the framework of the “QS Stars” evaluation program, one of the world’s prestigious rating systems. (14.04.2025)

AzTU has been included in the “QS World University Rankings 2026” list, placing it among the top 1000 universities in the world. AzTU ranked in the 851–900 range.

According to the results announced by the international rating agency “Times Higher Education” (THE) for 2026, Azerbaijan Technical University (AzTU) ranked 1501+ among the world’s leading higher education institutions and 2nd in the country.

AzTU participated for the first time in the “Times Higher Education” (THE) ranking for 2026 in the fields of “Engineering” and “Physical Sciences,” placing in the 1251+ range.

According to the “QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026” results, the university ranked in the 701–750 range for the Computer Science and Information Systems major.”

It was also stated that AzTU’s inclusion in these world rankings is a clear example of the university’s recognition in the international academic sphere and its operation in accordance with global educational standards:

“In the very near future, the public will also be informed about major projects that will be beneficial for higher education in Azerbaijan.”
