Azerbaijan’s MFA rejects New York mayor’s statement on the so-called “Armenian genocide”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Azerbaijan has condemned the statement of New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani regarding the so-called “Armenian genocide”.

elchi reports that Aykhan Hajizada, Head of the Press Service Department of the Azerbaijani MFA, stated this on his “X” account.

Aykhan Hajizada noted that public figures should act responsibly, refrain from spreading disinformation, and contribute to reconciliation instead of deepening division with politically motivated, historically inaccurate statements:

“We reject the provocative statement of the New York mayor. Such views demonstrate a lack of understanding of the region’s history and realities and distort facts for political purposes.

In 2020, Azerbaijan acted within its internationally recognized sovereign territories in accordance with international law and UN Security Council resolutions.

The anti-terror measures carried out in 2023 resulted in the restoration of Azerbaijan’s constitutional order after 30 years of illegal occupation.”

The MFA official emphasized that the New York mayor’s claims of “expulsion” do not reflect the truth. On the contrary, Armenian residents were offered reintegration, full equal rights, and security guarantees, but Zohran Mamdani ignored this.

“It is particularly disturbing that an elected official promotes one-sided narratives while ignoring the ethnic cleansing and massacres committed against hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis during the occupation, as well as the destruction of cultural and religious heritage. Such irresponsible statements are unacceptable and must be retracted immediately,” added Aykhan Hajizada.
