Mauritius gives London until the end of July

Mauritius is prepared to wait until the end of July for the finalization of an agreement with the United Kingdom regarding the transfer of the Chagos Archipelago to the jurisdiction of the African state.

“Elchi” reports, citing Reuters, that this was stated by the Attorney General of Mauritius, Gavin Glover.

It is noted that the British delegation held a meeting with the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Navin Ramgoolam, for the first time since the deal was halted due to objections from US President Donald Trump.

The agreement provides for the transfer of sovereignty over the Chagos to Mauritius, while retaining the right to use the joint US-British military base on the island of Diego Garcia.

According to Glover, there is no clarity in the country regarding whether the US government will provide the necessary consent for the deal to proceed.

“We will give them until the end of July. We will wait until then, and then the Mauritian government will have to determine the next steps depending on how the situation in the UK develops,” he noted.
