Mexico promises security for the World Cup

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that all security measures have been taken for guests arriving in the country for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and that they are working with FIFA on special protocols for the matches.

Reminding that they are already working with FIFA, Sheinbaum said, “All guarantees are in place. There is a security team and a security protocol for the World Cup. I was with FIFA officials yesterday.”
Sheinbaum noted that they are coordinating with the governors of the states that will host the World Cup matches, adding, “It is safe to be in Mexico; in fact, 16 million people visited our country in January and February alone, we are talking about 16 million foreign guests.” Addressing the shooting that occurred yesterday at the Teotihuacan Pyramids in Mexico City, which resulted in the death of a Canadian tourist, Sheinbaum stated, “Yesterday’s incident highlighted the importance of strengthening security, especially in archaeological areas.” The opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be played on June 11, 2026, at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. Host nation Mexico will face South Africa in this match.
