In Azerbaijan’s foreign policy, relations with the Baltic states are of particular importance. Relations with Latvia, in particular, are built on the principles of mutual respect and trust and are developing consistently. During the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan-Latvia cooperation has reached a new stage, and ties in various directions have expanded further.
Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs’ official visit to Azerbaijan once again confirmed the importance of this cooperation. As the high-ranking guest emphasized, Latvia considers Azerbaijan a strategic partner and a reliable friend. The meetings held, the documents signed, and the opinions expressed once again demonstrated that the relations between the two countries are built on solid foundations. Cooperation ties are opening up new opportunities in economic and humanitarian directions in parallel with the political sphere. In the future, it is expected that the relations between the parties will deepen even further.
These thoughts were expressed by Member of the Milli Majlis Rashad Mahmudov. He noted that there is no doubt that the Latvian President’s visit to our country will open broader opportunities for the formation of a new political dynamic in Azerbaijan-Latvia relations. In addition, this visit was of great importance in terms of strengthening mutual trust, intensifying political dialogue, and strengthening coordination on international platforms. The business forum held in Baku further enriched the strategic line of partnership and bilateral relations by forming new opportunities for deepening economic cooperation. The opinions expressed by the head of our state regarding the Latvian President’s visit to our country were remembered for important points in terms of expanding cooperation in new directions of Azerbaijan-Latvia relations and clearly revealed the essence and strategic direction of the future development of bilateral relations. Undoubtedly, this meant the formation of a new stage of political and economic cooperation in Azerbaijan-Latvia relations.
President Ilham Aliyev, while expressing clear thoughts, noted that various directions of the bilateral agenda, including issues of international importance, were discussed extensively with his counterpart both in a one-on-one format and with the participation of delegations. Also, the existing strong framework of cooperation between the countries has been established on a legal basis with the Declaration on Strategic Partnership, and this document has created a solid foundation for their development by raising relations to the highest level. Touching upon the business forum held, the head of our country noted that it is an important platform in terms of developing economic relations, expanding mutual investment opportunities, and forming joint production projects.
Another important direction discussed was the expansion of direct aviation connections. The head of our country noted that despite certain difficulties in the current global aviation and fuel market, cooperation in this field can create new opportunities, and this is of strategic importance in terms of both economic relations and human flow. Furthermore, the President emphasized that the field of education is also one of the important components of cooperation, stating that more than 450 Azerbaijani students studying in Latvia show that humanitarian relations are at a high level and strengthen mutual understanding between future generations. Also, the head of our country noted that the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia is demonstrating positive dynamics, stating that the results achieved in this direction serve to form stability in the region and emphasized that political will and strategic visions are the main determinants of long-term peace, and that this model can be an example for other conflict regions as well.
In conclusion, the deputy noted that the Latvian President’s visit to Baku was extremely important in terms of deepening relations. President Edgars Rinkēvičs’ remark addressed to the head of state of Azerbaijan, ‘I look forward to continuing our cooperation,’ was remembered as a demonstration of his interest in bilateral relations, as well as the high respect shown to President Ilham Aliyev and Azerbaijan. This was an indicator of our country’s international prestige and the political weight of the Azerbaijani leader formed at the global level.
