Dubai’s famous Burj Al Arab hotel to close for 18 months

Dubai’s world-famous Burj Al Arab hotel is undergoing its first large-scale renovation since opening in 1999. According to information confirmed by a hotel official on Wednesday, the hotel will be closed for 18 months at a time when tourism in the region is slowing down due to the US-Israel-Iran war.
“Elchi” reports that the hotel’s owner, Jumeirah Group, stated in a press release that the renovation work will be carried out in phases and the project will be managed by Paris-based interior designer Tristan Auer. Although a full closure was not mentioned in the statement, a hotel employee said that guests with reservations would be offered accommodation at other nearby hotels during this period. The official added that the closure period may vary depending on the work.
The impact of war on tourism and damage claims
Known for its sail-shaped architecture, the hotel, which is Dubai’s most recognizable structure, suffered damage to its exterior due to falling debris during the interception of an Iranian drone in early March. However, the hotel official emphasized that these long-planned renovation works are not related to the events that took place in March.
The timing of the renovation decision is notable, as it coincides with a period when regional conflicts have reduced travel demand to Dubai.
Luxury hotel groups have warned that profit margins are under pressure due to flight cancellations and declining visitor demand.
Jumeirah Group did not directly link the project to the war in the region in its official statement.
