Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has stated that she strongly condemns the violation of the ceasefire in the Middle East.
elchi reports that the Italian leader also drew attention to the issue of the Strait of Hormuz.
“Restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is a vital interest for Italy and the European Union,” Meloni said.
The Italian Prime Minister noted that more than 30 countries are working to open the Strait of Hormuz:
“We are already working on this issue with a coalition of countries consisting of more than 30 nations, established with the support of Great Britain, which can ensure the security that will allow for the full restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. We believe this contribution is important at this stage of the negotiations.”
Giorgia Meloni emphasized that if Iran gains the right to impose additional transit fees through the strait, it could lead to economic consequences and the redirection of trade flows: “Therefore, for Italy and its partners, the priority is to fully restore freedom of navigation to the level it was before February 28, in order to normalize the tense situation in the markets for energy, essential raw materials, fertilizers, and other goods vital to our economy.”
The Italian Prime Minister also added:
“We are one step closer to a turning point, but we are now facing the prospect of a fragile ceasefire (between the US and Iran) that must be pursued with determination.”
