The Tehran correspondent for Japan’s public broadcaster NHK, who had been detained in Iran since January, has been released on bail.
“Elchi” reports that, according to Kyodo News Agency, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara Minoru confirmed at a press conference that the unnamed Japanese journalist was released yesterday.
Kihara stated that after being released on bail, the journalist met with the Japanese ambassador in Tehran and is in good health. Due to the charges of espionage against the journalist, he is not allowed to leave the country and is expected to appear before a judge in the coming days.
Furthermore, the Tokyo government continues its diplomatic efforts with the Tehran authorities to allow the released journalist to return to Japan as soon as possible. On the other hand, another Japanese citizen detained during the same period has also returned to his country after being released.
To resolve the crisis, Japan’s Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu met with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and requested the release of their citizens.
