SEC clarifies controversial mathematics question in graduation exam

The State Examination Center (SEC) has clarified a controversial question in mathematics during the graduation exam.

Information about this was provided to “Elchi” by the SEC.

It was reported that the main purpose of the task presented on the topic of trapezoids in the graduation exam held on April 5, 2026, at the general education level, is to test students’ ability to identify the equality of alternate interior angles formed as a result of the bisector of an acute angle, and to use the similarity of the triangles formed on this basis to find the ratios between the sides:

“The numbers given in the task are not meant to be the sides of any specific triangle, but are used for constructing similarity ratios. The selection of these numbers primarily serves to make calculations simple and accessible, rather than ensuring the existence of a geometric figure. In other words, the skill tested in this task is not to analyze the existence of a specific triangle using the triangle inequality, but to draw correct conclusions from the given geometric relationships. Therefore, the approach related to the triangle inequality does not change the solution process and sequence of the task, and at the same time does not create any obstacle to obtaining the correct answer.

We state that these types of open-ended tasks are checked based on special assessment criteria, and not only students who identify the completely correct answer, but also those who obtain correct intermediate results in the solution process or correctly perform one of the solution stages, are taken into account in the assessment,” the information noted.
