Elon Musk has announced plans to start producing SpaceX and Tesla chips, which will be used for the operation of cars, robots, and artificial intelligence data centers in space.
According to the billionaire, a facility named “Terafab” is planned to be built near Tesla’s headquarters in Austin, Texas.
“Elchi” reports that Bloomberg published this information on Saturday.
Key details of the “Terafab” project:
Two types of chips: The facility will specialize in two areas:
For cars and humanoid robots.
Chips to be used by SpaceX and xAI in the creation of space data centers.
Structure: According to Musk’s post on the “X” platform, “Terafab” will technically consist of two separate factories, each producing only one type of chip.
Necessity: Musk noted that the current chip industry is not supplying at a pace that will meet the needs of his projects: “Either we build Terafab, or we run out of chips. We need chips, so we are building Terafab.”
Goal: The facility aims to produce chips with a total annual power of 1 terawatt. This is approximately twice the power currently produced in the US in one year.
Future goals:
Musk also spoke about plans to produce chips capable of providing 100-200 gigawatts of power per year, and other chips designed for 1 terawatt of power in space. However, a precise date for the facility’s launch and when these targets will be achieved has not been specified.
