50 thousand teachers could lose their jobs — Əli Əhmədov

A sharp decline in the number of child births is recorded in Azerbaijan. This issue drew attention during today’s session of the Milli Majlis, where the government’s activities of the past year were discussed. First Vice-Speaker Əli Əhmədov raised an alarm about the demographic situation in the country during his speech.

According to “Elchi”, the parliamentary official compared the statistical difference recorded in the last decade with figures. He emphasized that the country’s growth rate has weakened. “As is known, a decrease in Azerbaijan’s growth rate has been observed in the last few years. While more than 160 thousand children were born in Azerbaijan in 2015, this indicator was below 100 thousand in 2025,” Əli Əhmədov stated.
This trend is expected to seriously impact the education system and the labor market in the future. The First Vice-Speaker noted that the decreasing number of children creates the risk of thousands of teachers becoming unemployed. He also expressed concern about the imbalance between the working population and those reaching retirement age.

Əli Əhmədov called on the government to take more active steps in this direction. “If 1.5-1.6 million children were studying in secondary schools in 2015, in a few years, the number of children studying in schools will be 1 million. This also creates the risk of approximately 50 thousand teachers being laid off. In a few decades, there will be a significant change in the ratio between the retired population and the working-age population. I believe that in 2026 and subsequent years, the government, led by Əli müəllim, will increase its attention to demographic issues,” the parliamentary official concluded.
