The approach of Russian reconnaissance satellites to European communication and military satellites created a space security alarm on the continent, initiating a new military readiness process for encrypted satellite networks and defense space systems under Germany’s leadership. While European governments take joint steps to protect critical infrastructure, France is concerned about Germany’s growing influence.
“Elchi” reports that, according to information provided by EU Observer and Defence Matters, known for their close ties with the European Union, the approach of maneuverable Russian reconnaissance satellites to the orbit of European communication and military satellites has also accelerated new defense measures for space security on the continent. European governments, led by Germany, have agreed to rapidly implement plans to expand encrypted satellite networks, defense “observation” satellites, and military space investments. According to the information, only France constitutes an exception to this decision. President Emmanuel Macron is reportedly concerned about Germany’s rapidly increasing military influence on the continent.
Spy Satellite in European Orbit
According to information provided by EU Observer, a publication known for its close ties with the European Union, citing the European Space Agency (ESA) and security officials, Russia’s “Cosmos-2589” satellite has been maneuvering towards geostationary orbit since November 2025. This orbital belt, at an altitude of approximately 36,000 kilometers, is of crucial importance as it hosts numerous European and international communication satellites. The satellite’s manufacturer, AO Reshetnev, is known for previously developing Luch-class reconnaissance satellites that blocked the waves of Western military satellites.
