A criminal case has been initiated regarding a drone attack on civilian infrastructure in Nakhchivan.
“Elchi” reports that the Press Service of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Azerbaijan released information about this.
It was reported that on March 5, two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with remotely controlled explosive warheads launched from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran carried out an attack against civilian infrastructure objects in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Preliminary investigative actions determined that one of the unmanned aerial vehicles fell on the terminal building of Nakhchivan International Airport, and the other near an educational institution located in the village of Shakarabad, Babek district.
As a result of the incident, significant damage was caused to a civilian infrastructure object, namely the administrative building and operations of Nakhchivan International Airport. Furthermore, due to the deliberate unlawful disruption of airport services, a civilian aircraft, flight number 264, which was supposed to operate on the Nakhchivan-Baku route, was forced to return towards Baku city for safety reasons while airborne.
In addition, as a result of the incident, four civilians:

– Valiyeva Reyhana Sabir qizi, born in 1986,
– Zulfugarli Zulfugar Mammad oglu, born in 1996,
– Asgarov Mehdi Matlab oglu, born in 1996, and
– passenger Jafarov Asad Vidadi oglu, born in 1998, who was waiting to board the plane, sustained injuries of varying degrees.
The injured individuals were provided with appropriate medical assistance, and their treatment is currently ongoing under supervision in the hospital.
Regarding the incident, a criminal case was initiated by the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Azerbaijan under the relevant articles of the Criminal Code, and the preliminary investigation was entrusted to the Investigation Department of the Prosecutor General’s Office.
Currently, within the criminal case, employees of the prosecutor’s office, together with relevant state bodies, have inspected the scene, collected material evidence, taken initial statements from victims and witnesses, and numerous investigative actions are being carried out, including the appointment of relevant expert examinations.
Furthermore, technical investigations are also being conducted regarding the origin of the UAVs and their control route.
Within the framework of the preliminary investigation, all circumstances of this attack carried out against the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan, contrary to the norms and principles of international law, will be objectively, fully, and comprehensively investigated, and necessary measures will be ensured to bring the perpetrators to justice in accordance with the procedure stipulated by law.
The Prosecutor General’s Office states that targeting civilian population and strategic infrastructure objects is a gross violation of the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law.
Necessary investigative and operational measures are continuing within the criminal case, and additional information will be provided to the public.
