Drinking coffee or tea every day can help the brain age healthily.
“Elchi” reports that, according to a study published in the journal “JAMA”, moderate caffeine consumption reduces the risk of developing dementia by 18%.
The greatest impact was observed in participants who consumed moderate amounts of caffeine. However, higher caffeine consumption did not lead to negative outcomes and showed a similar neuroprotective effect as moderate caffeine consumption.
Coffee and tea contain bioactive compounds such as polyphenols and caffeine, which can act as neuroprotective factors by reducing inflammation and cell damage and supporting cognitive health.
The study included more than 130,000 people who were assessed for diet, dementia risk, and cognitive function. Participants were followed for up to 43 years, allowing researchers to explore how consumption of caffeinated coffee, tea, and decaffeinated coffee affects the risk of dementia and cognitive health over time.
During the follow-up period, 11,033 participants developed dementia.
In both men and women, those who consumed the most caffeine had an 18% lower risk of dementia compared to those who consumed little or no caffeinated beverages.
Coffee drinkers were less likely to report subjective signs of cognitive decline – their own feelings of memory loss or confusion: 7.8% vs. 9.5%.
Previous studies have linked caffeine to increased insulin sensitivity and improved vascular function, which may partially explain its protective effect against cognitive decline.
