Trump Extends Authorization to Detain Vessels Heading to Cuba

U.S. President Donald Trump has extended for another year the order authorizing the detention and inspection of American and foreign vessels heading to Cuba.

According to “Elchi”, the corresponding notice was published in the Federal Register, the official collection of documents of the U.S. government.

The document states that the Cuban government has not demonstrated that it will refrain from using excessive force against U.S. vessels and aircraft. These vessels and aircraft may be involved in events or peaceful protests north of Cuba.

“In addition, the unauthorized entry of any U.S.-registered vessel into Cuban territorial waters is detrimental to U.S. foreign policy and may encourage mass migration from Cuba,” the document states.

According to the U.S. authorities, mass migration from Cuba would threaten U.S. national security because it could cause or threaten to disrupt international relations.

The American leader noted that, in this regard, he is extending the state of emergency regime related to Cuba and the emergency powers that allow for the detention of vessels heading to the republic.
