Negotiations between German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron on the creation of joint European nuclear deterrent forces are still in an early stage and are not intended to replace the US nuclear “umbrella”.
“Elchi” reports that the Reuters agency reports this with reference to an official representative of the German government.
The official representative said:
“The purpose of the negotiations is to explore ways for closer cooperation in the field of nuclear deterrence. We are still at a very early stage. It is intended here not to replace the US nuclear “umbrella”, but to complement and strengthen it. The US plays a central role in NATO’s nuclear deterrence system. This is the current situation and we want it to remain so in the future.”
