The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has partially suspended operations after lawmakers failed to reach an agreement on funding its agencies.
“Elchi” reports this with reference to US media.
It is noted that the “shutdown” (partial or complete suspension of operations due to lack of funding) has resulted in 13 percent of DHS employees being sent on unpaid leave for an indefinite period. They will not be able to continue their work until the crisis is resolved.
The situation arose during discussions in Congress when a portion of Democrats made strict demands regarding the activities of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) service after a series of incidents, and in return, made it a condition to continue funding the agency. However, senators failed to reach an agreement, and as a result, a partial “shutdown” of the DHS occurred.
