The 2009 decision, known as the “endangerment finding,” listed greenhouse gases as a threat to public health and provided the legal basis for many climate regulations, mainly vehicle emissions.
The White House called the move “the biggest regulatory rollback in American history.” The government claimed the decision would reduce vehicle costs, saving automakers $2,400 per vehicle and giving consumers access to cheaper cars.
The legal basis for the decision has been removed
Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump claimed the 2009 decision had seriously damaged the American auto industry and unfairly raised prices.
Trump said the rule formed the legal basis for what Democrats call the “Green New Deal” and characterized existing rules as a “scam.” Former President Barack Obama reacted negatively to the decision, saying it would make Americans more vulnerable and unhealthy in the face of climate change.
Obama claimed the sole purpose of the decision was to allow the fossil fuel industry to make more money.
