Politico: Europeans understand that the US is starting to see Europe as a competitor

Europe has changed its approach to relations with the US after Washington’s claims regarding Greenland.

Elchi.az reports that the Politico publication released information about this, citing sources.

“We are forced to apply a tougher approach in our relations with the US administration,” a high-ranking European official told the publication, adding that Europeans are beginning to understand that Americans increasingly see Europe not as an ally, but as a competitor.

According to him, the situation has fundamentally changed compared to the times when there was cooperation between Washington and Brussels: “Now we are participating in the struggle for power.”

A French diplomat, speaking to Politico on condition of anonymity, also said that Europeans are “experiencing the fifth stage of grief” due to the US’s disrespectful attitude. “Now we understand that the US administration will create difficulties in the near future,” he noted.

The publication emphasizes that the upcoming Munich Security Conference — an annual meeting of transatlantic diplomatic and defense leaders — will be the first indicator of how the position of Europeans is formed.
