The European Commission has accused TikTok of violating the Digital Services Act (DSA) and demanded immediate changes to its addictive design.
Elchi.az reports that, according to BFMTV, if the social network does not comply with these requirements, the company could face a fine of up to 6% of its global revenue.
Brussels believes that the platform’s algorithms harm the mental health of underage users. Particular concern is directed at the application’s features that encourage users to continue using it even at night.
European Commissioner for Digital Technologies Henna Virkkunen stated that TikTok must change its interface to protect children in Europe. The Commission requires the company to review the service’s core design and implement effective parental control tools.
An EU representative noted that while TikTok has acknowledged some risks, the measures taken are not sufficient to comply with Europe’s strict rules. For example, the ease with which screen time settings can be turned off and the complex system of parental control are problematic.
TikTok has now been given time to review and respond to the complaints. Previously, the company had indicated its willingness to cooperate, but the final decision could result in a fine worth millions of euros.
