Comprehensive New Security Law Approved in Italy

The right-wing coalition government in Italy, headed by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has approved a new security law bill that allows for 12-hour preventative detention for those with the potential to cause riots during protests and provides broader legal protection for law enforcement officers acting in self-defense.
Elchi.az reports that the government expedited the drafting of the new security law bill and finalized it last night after a hammer attack on a police officer and the injury of approximately 100 police officers during a protest against the relocation of a social center in Turin, northern Italy, on January 31.
According to a written statement from the Prime Minister’s office, the new security bill, approved by the Council of Ministers chaired by Meloni in the evening, stipulates that those with the potential to cause riots during protests will be kept away from demonstrations through 12-hour preventative detention; broader legal protection will be given to law enforcement officers acting in self-defense; the sale of knives to children will be prohibited; families carrying prohibited knives will be penalized; bomb makers will be banned from entering the country; and measures will be taken against pickpockets and youth gangs.
Prime Minister Meloni stated in a post on the US-based X social media platform regarding the new security bill approved by her cabinet, “These are not one-off measures, but the next step in the strategy that this government has been implementing since taking office.”
