US President Donald Trump has threatened military operations if the US base on Diego Garcia Island, which belongs to Mauritius, is threatened.
Elchi.az reports that he wrote about this on the social network “X” after negotiations with British Prime Minister Kir Starmer.
“I understand that the agreement concluded by Prime Minister Starmer is, in the opinion of many, the best of the possible agreements. However, if the lease agreement is ever cancelled in the future, or if someone threatens or endangers US operations and forces at our base, I reserve the right to ensure and strengthen the US presence in Diego Garcia militarily,” Trump wrote.
Trump emphasized that this strategically important large military base in the center of the Indian Ocean is of great importance for the national security of the United States.
It should be noted that Diego Garcia Island is part of the Chagos Archipelago. In May 2025, Great Britain officially handed over sovereignty over the archipelago in the Indian Ocean to Mauritius.
