Guterres WARNS of UN financial collapse

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned of a very real prospect of financial collapse for the global organization.

Elchi.az reports that in an interview with “La Repubblica”, he stated that a structural crisis is being created without reforms in the financing rules.

“I emphasized that this is not a normal cash flow problem. I made it clear to the Member States that although the UN has dealt with difficult times in the past regarding non-payment of contributions, the current situation is fundamentally different,” he said, answering a question about the recent letter he sent to ambassadors warning of an imminent financial collapse.

He recalled that decisions regarding non-payment of contributions, which finance a significant portion of the approved regular budget, lead to a structural crisis: “According to the current financial rules, when funds are not received, the organization is legally obliged to return unspent amounts, even if the tasks cannot be fully implemented. This causes operational delays and reduces the effectiveness of the implementation of mandates approved by the member states themselves. This exposes the UN to structural financial risks and presents it with a stark choice: Member states must either agree to reform the UN’s financial rules or accept the real prospect of its financial collapse,” the Secretary-General said.
