The most powerful flare on the Sun reached level X4.2

The highest class flare recorded on the Sun on Wednesday reached level X4.2.

Elchi.az reports that this was reported by the Institute of Applied Geophysics (FGMBU “IPG”).

The institute reported that on February 4, at 15:12, an X4.2 class flare lasting 16 minutes was recorded in the X-ray range in spot group No. 4366 (N16E04).

It was noted that since the beginning of February, including February 4, seven X-class flares have already occurred on the Sun.

Solar flares are divided into five classes according to the strength of X-ray radiation: A, B, C, M and X. The minimum class A0.0 corresponds to radiation with a power of 10 nanowatts per square meter in Earth’s orbit. The power increases tenfold with each subsequent letter transition.

Usually, solar flares are accompanied by the ejection of plasma masses. When these plasma clouds reach Earth, they can cause magnetic storms.
