The death toll from heavy snowfall affecting Japan since January 20 has risen to 35, while the number of injured has reached 358.
Elchi.az reports that the death toll is increasing due to heavy snowfall affecting Japan since January 20. According to the latest data released by the Japan Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA), the death toll from heavy snowfall and cold weather has reached 35.
The prefecture with the highest number of deaths is Niigata (12 people), followed by Akita (7 people), Yamagata (5 people), and Hokkaido and Aomori (4 people each). In addition, one death each was recorded in Iwate, Nagano, and Shimane prefectures. It was reported that 358 people across the country, including 126 seriously and 232 slightly, were injured. Although detailed information about the deaths was not provided, local media reported that some people died after falling from roofs while trying to clear snowdrifts.
The snow thickness in the areas most affected by the snowfall has exceeded 2 meters, reaching a record level of 4.5 meters in some villages of Aomori.
