Effects were mainly observed in the western regions of the country – Betsibuka, Sualale and Vakinankaratra, as well as in the central regions – Analamanga and Antananarivo. The country’s president, Mikael Randrianirina, announced that 145 tons of free rice would be distributed to the victims and electric generators would be provided for the transition period.

The strong tropical storm “Fitiya” reached the north-western regions of Madagascar on January 31 and February 1. The wind speed reached 210 km/h and heavy rains fell. According to estimates, up to 150 mm of precipitation fell, which caused a sharp rise in water levels in rivers, floods and landslides.
