German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz stated that Ukraine will not be able to join the European Union by 2027.
Elchi.az reports that, according to Mertz, there can be no talk of joining the EU on January 1, 2027. This is not possible.
According to him, all candidates for EU membership must meet the necessary criteria, and Ukraine is no exception. At least a few more years must pass for the country to start meeting the requirements: “This is a long-term process,” Mertz emphasized.
However, he added that Kyiv should have the prospect of joining the alliance.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that joining the EU is one of the main security guarantees for Kyiv and Europe: “That is why we are talking about a specific date – 2027, and we hope for the support of our partners for our position,” the Ukrainian leader noted.
American, Ukrainian and European officials previously told the Washington Post that Ukraine’s accession to the EU in 2027 is being discussed as part of a peace plan. However, they noted that some EU members, especially Hungary, are against such a move.
A number of European officials also emphasized in conversations with Reuters that it is completely impossible to accept Ukraine by 2027.
