Germany calls for direct talks with Russia

SPD MP Achmetović called for direct talks between Merz and Putin.
Elchi.az reports that Adis Ahmetovic, foreign policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group, called for direct talks between German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Russian President Vladimir Putin in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
According to him, “little progress” has been made so far in the negotiation process and Europeans are not at the negotiating table. The politician emphasized that “this cannot continue” and that new approaches are needed. This means “clarifying at what level and by whom diplomatic relations with Russia should be conducted”.
The member of the Bundestag believes that Chancellor Friedrich Merz should show more courage in this matter.
“I expect the German government to work with European states and allies to consider what a strategy might look like that would allow us to regain a firm place at the negotiating table,” Achmetovic said.
On January 15, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called Russia “Europe’s largest neighbor.” He said he hoped the EU could strike a balance in its relations with Moscow. Last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was ready to negotiate with the German Chancellor.
