The 2024 YR4 asteroid, which is likely to hit the Moon in 2032, causes both great concern and excitement in the scientific world. Although this celestial body, which is approximately 60 meters in diameter, is considered a threat to Earth, its probability of colliding with the Moon is currently around 4 percent.
Elchi.az reports that the possibility of the 60-meter-diameter 2024 YR4 asteroid, which is being monitored by astronomers, hitting the Moon in 2032 has mobilized the scientific world.
This collision, which is expected to occur with an estimated probability of 4 percent, will release energy equivalent to the explosion of a medium-sized thermonuclear weapon.
This event, which can be observed with the naked eye from the Pacific region, will create a new crater approximately 1 kilometer wide on the surface of the Moon.
The internal structure of the Moon will be illuminated by seismic waves
The seismic waves created at the moment of impact will play the role of a laboratory to reveal the unknowns about the depths of the Moon. A 5.0 magnitude tremor felt on the entire surface will help us understand the Moon’s core and layers.
Advanced observation tools such as the James Webb Space Telescope will monitor the cooling process of the molten water pool and collect unique data on crater formation mechanisms.
