EU Prepares Investment Package to Support Greenland

The European Union (EU) will soon present an investment plan aimed at supporting and developing Greenland.

Elchi.az reports that this was announced by the office of the European Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jozef Sikela.

“We are preparing a significant investment package that will improve daily life in Greenland and strengthen our strong support for Greenlanders’ right to decide their own future,” Sikela said.

The investments will be directed to an EU project aimed at developing renewable energy sources, communications, as well as supporting the defense industry and electric vehicle production. The community plans to approximately double its investment in the island to 500 million euros, as well as support existing projects. Sikela will visit Denmark on January 26 and meet with high-level officials, including Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen.

After negotiations with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on January 21, US President Donald Trump announced that the outlines of the Greenland agreement had emerged. The draft agreement proposed by Rutte to President Trump envisages maintaining Denmark’s sovereignty over Greenland and updating the terms of the 1951 agreement on the defense of the island. This will allow the US to create military bases and “defense zones” there if NATO deems it necessary.
