The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has officially completed the process of withdrawing the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO), fulfilling one of President Donald Trump’s long-held goals.
Elchi.az reports that President Trump finalized the withdrawal process from the WHO, which he initiated during his first term, with an executive order signed on the first day of his second term. According to U.S. law, withdrawal requires one year’s notice and payment of all outstanding debts.
Currently, the U.S. owes the WHO approximately $260 million. Legal experts say it is unlikely that the U.S. will make this payment, and the WHO has limited legal means to collect the money.
“We promised and we delivered”
The HHS statement said that all funding provided by the U.S. government to the WHO has been cut off, and all staff and contractors working within the organization have been recalled. The official participation of the U.S. in WHO-funded committees, governing bodies, and technical working groups has also ended.
A senior administration official claimed that the WHO acted against the interests of the American people, stating, “We were unable to recoup the value, money, and staff we invested. We promised and we delivered.”
