Japanese Parliament Dissolved for Early General Election

The House of Representatives, the lower house of the Japanese parliament, has been dissolved to allow for early general elections.
Elchi.az reports with reference to Kyodo that the House of Representatives dissolved itself this morning at the first meeting of the new legislative term.
The dissolution of the parliament, whose term would normally last until 2028, triggers an immediate early general election process.
The general election campaign, scheduled for February 8, will begin on January 27.
Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae announced earlier this week that the House of Representatives would be dissolved on January 23 for the planned early general election.
Takaichi, who came to power after a leadership change in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), said she considered early elections necessary to get a public vote of confidence for the post of prime minister. Takaichi, who took office as Japan’s first female prime minister in October 2025, said the decision to hold early elections would “risk the post of prime minister and allow voters to decide whether she stays in office.”
