South Korea has set a global precedent by adopting a comprehensive law regulating the safe use of artificial intelligence.
Elchi.az reports, citing Yonhap, that the South Korean Ministry of Science and Information Communication Technologies has issued a statement regarding the regulation titled “Basic Law on Promoting the Use and Ensuring the Reliability of Artificial Intelligence.”
The statement noted that the law, which came into effect today, creates a comprehensive regulatory framework against misinformation, deepfake content, and other harmful effects of using artificial intelligence.
The statement noted that the law places greater responsibility on companies and developers to address risks arising from artificial intelligence and empowers the government to impose penalties and initiate investigations to combat false content and deepfake content produced by artificial intelligence.
The statement noted that systems used in areas that could significantly impact users’ daily lives and safety will be designated as “high-risk artificial intelligence,” the use of watermarks will be mandatory for people to understand artificial intelligence products, and companies that meet certain standards will be required to have a representative in the country. It was emphasized that the law is the first comprehensive legal regulation in the world regarding the use of artificial intelligence.
