NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte made statements to the press after a bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. Rutte said he had always emphasized to Europeans that the US remained committed to NATO, adding that the “only worrying issue” was that Europe did not spend as much money on defense as the US, but that this was resolved at the Hague Summit. Regarding Trump’s statement that he “doubted that Europe would help him if the US was attacked,” Rutte said: “Let me tell you, they will come to help, and as you know, they did so in Afghanistan. For every American who paid the highest price, there was a soldier from another NATO country, especially the Netherlands, Denmark and other countries, who could not return to his family. If the US is attacked, you can be sure that your allies will be with you.”
