The US and UK have decided to reduce the number of personnel stationed at the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar after Donald Trump considered military options against Tehran following the harsh suppression of protests in Iran.
Elchi.az reports that officials have described the withdrawal of some American personnel as a precautionary measure, while the UK has also reportedly taken similar steps and evacuated some military personnel from the region.
The Qatari government’s statement said these measures were taken in response to the current tensions in the region.
Diplomatic missions and aviation restrictions
As tensions rise, the British Foreign Office has announced that it is temporarily closing its embassy in Tehran and will conduct its operations remotely.
The US Embassy in Doha has advised its personnel to be cautious and avoid non-essential travel to Al Udeid Air Base. Iran closed its airspace to almost all flights starting at 02:45 local time on Thursday. The restriction, which was initially scheduled to last two hours, was later extended until the morning. Following this incident, many airlines, including Air India and Lufthansa, announced that they would not use Iranian and Iraqi airspace and would change their routes.
