California Attorney General Rob Bonta has launched a formal investigation into the role of the Grok model, developed by Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI, in the proliferation of sexually explicit deepfake images targeting women and children.
Elchi.az reports that Attorney General Bonta stated in a statement that the information about the unauthorized, indecent materials produced by xAI in recent weeks and shared on the Internet was shocking. Bonta emphasized that these images are used to harass people on the Internet and called on the company to take immediate action.
Allegations of abuse of children’s and women’s images
The investigation focuses on allegations that Grok users created unauthorized sexually explicit images using ordinary images of women and children found on the Internet, and that this content was distributed on the X platform. Analyses show that more than half of the 20,000 images produced through Grok consisted of unauthorized, indecent content, some of which targeted children.
California Governor Gavin Newsom also called xAI’s decision “disgusting,” saying the company created a “breeding ground for criminals.” Democratic senators have called on Apple and Google to remove the X and Grok apps from their app stores.
