Mount Marapi erupts, spewing ash to a height of 4.5 km

The eruption of Mount Marapi occurred on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia (West Sumatra province).

Elchi.az reports that the Antara news agency reported this with reference to the observation post.
According to volcano workers, the ash rose 1,600 meters from the volcano’s crater, or 4,491 meters above sea level. It is reported that the ash spread in a north-easterly direction. The Indonesian Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation has advised local residents and visitors to the area to be cautious and stay within a 3-kilometer radius of the volcano’s crater.
Marapi is an active volcano 2,891 m above sea level, located at the north-western end of the Barisan Range in the west of the republic. In December 2023, at least 22 people died as a result of the eruption of Marapi. The Indonesian archipelago, the world’s largest archipelago, consists of 18,000 islands and is located in the Pacific Ocean’s so-called “Ring of Fire”, which makes the region susceptible to strong seismic activity. In total, there are more than 500 volcanoes in Indonesia, of which approximately 130 are active.
